Community Garden Kitchen of Collin County partnered with the North Texas Food Bank to feed youngsters at the Merritt Community Center in McKinney through the summer of 2016. CGK served lunch to the children who live in nearby public housing during June, July and August. The new partnership is part of the North Texas Food Bank’s “Kids Café” program, which began in 1998 as a way to provide nutritious after-school meals to children who may not have enough to eat when they get home from school. The program was expanded to include a summer food service program, which today serves nearly 2,400 children during the summer months.
The CGK board voted to bring this program to McKinney as a way to feed children, increase community awareness, and develop a comprehensive volunteer management program. Volunteers are eager to feed people and this program attracted attention and introduced the goal to build a permanent facility to a new group of people.
